Since the age of eight, I have dreamt of owning a sleddogteam. Admittedly rather a strange dream for a boy born in Larache (a small village bordering the desert in Marocco). However sometimes good fortune hides just around the most unusual corners.
Whilst still a child I moved with my parents, who are of Spanish origin, from Marocco to France. After studying I later moved on to Germany. This long journey and the restless years paved the way towards the realisation of my dream of owning my own sleddogteam. It was not the easiest of paths to take but manageable.
- Step by Step -
In the year 2000 I became aquainted with Musher Klaus Starflinger (at that time the World Champion) at the Sleddog Show in Völklingen. A year later he invited me to a training camp at Gafsele-Sweden, where I was to assist as a Dog-Handler.
On 25th December 2001, I set out in the middle of a snowstorm with my two Siberian Huskies, Zytha and Anuk, in a fully loaded car. What I experienced and learnt there exceded all expectations of my readings about life as a musher. Despite the cold of the Swedish Outback, the flame of enthusiasm for sleddogs well and truly burst into my life. Slowly but surely my dream of owning my own dog team was coming true. My first hounds came from the Egil Ellis breeding line (Alaska) and Klaus Starflinger (Germany). I trained with them every spare minute I had and in the Autumn of 2004 entered, with my four dog team, at the Frankonia Open in Schönberg/Lauf, with a strong will to win.
Today I realize that we were completely inexperienced, pure Greenhorns, yet we won third prize and our series of successes has continued ever since. Our greatest experiences were taking part in the Alpirace 2006, the World Cup in Sweden 2007 and the European Cup in Rastede 2008.
Our overall success interested the media. For years journalists from newspapers, radio and television have accompanied us. Sleddog-Racing may not be the sport for the majority of people, but it does excite/interest many people, a fact that many forms of media have now realized. They delight readers, listeners and viewers with exciting reports about our sport. However the most important factor for myself are the dogs. Without this gang there would have been no successes. I invest much time, love and patience in my dogs and because of my training as an animal kinesiologist I have gained a much deeper relationship with them. From this respect I am able to maintain that these dogs are worth every second we have spent with them. As a competitive athlete I regard a balanced diet and optimal care as essential for my dogs, which is why I rely on an optimum dog food.
When God had made the earth and sky,
the flowers and the trees,
he then made all the animals
and all the birds and bees.
And when his work was finished,
not one was quite the same.
And so he travelled land and sea
and everywhere he went,
a little creature followed him,
until his strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth
and in the sky and sea.
The little creature said,
“Dear Lord, there's not one left for me.”
The Father smiled and softly said,
“I've left you to the end,
I've turned my own name back to front,
and called you - DOG - my friend.”
